Becoming an Egg Donor

Every day we are approached by women who want to learn more about becoming an egg donor. We are always happy to sit and answer all questions about this amazing process. Before we get further into this blog post, let’s start at the beginning.

What is Egg Donation?

In the simplest of terms, egg donation is when a woman (donor) donates her eggs to another woman (recipient) to allow the recipient to have a baby. It is a procedure that is part of assistive reproductive technology.

Why Would Someone Need an Egg Donor?

There are many reasons someone would need an egg donor but primarily women need an egg donor if they cannot use their own eggs. This could be for various reasons including older women with age related fertility issues, women who have experienced ovarian failure or insufficient ovarian function, and certain rare genetic conditions may require donor eggs.

In other instances, we provide surrogacy and egg donation solutions For The LGBTQ+ Community. Most male couples want a child with their own DNA and to achieve this we work with egg donors and gestational carriers. We are very proud to say that every male client that has allowed Family Formers to be a part of their journey is currently raising their baby or babies.

How Does the Egg Donation Process Work?

The egg donation process is very straightforward and simple. Potential egg donors go through a screening process to determine if they meet the criteria. Once the criteria has been met, the egg donor completes paperwork that includes a HIPAA form, egg donation records (if applicable), and others. The donor is then added to the donor list and matched with intended parents.

When a match has been made the donor undergoes a psychological and medical evaluations in order to begin the cycle. She may receive a prescription for oral contraceptives to help regulate her cycle. This will help coordinate her cycle to schedule the donation timeframe.

The second phase involves an 8 to 10-day series of injections of a follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), such as Follitism and Menopur. This medication helps the eggs grow and mature. The donor will have blood work and ultrasounds regularly during the stimulation phase to determine the number and size of the eggs.

During the egg retrieval procedure, the donor will be under general anesthesia to avoid discomfort. The IVF specialist will use an ultrasound machine for guidance and will insert a needle through the back of the vaginal wall to retrieve the eggs. This procedure will take about 20-30 minutes.

Recovery time varies from person to person but generally the experience of mild discomfort is similar to heavy menstrual cramps.
